A VISIT WITH BLOSSOM (THE POSSUM)

Little Blossom is growing! I had a chance to visit her the other day (and my friend, Bobbie, of course) and snapped a few pictures as she poked her head out for a little snack of cherries and grapes. I know some of you don't think possums are cute, I didn't either until I got to know one real well. I mean, ya love dogs, right? Are all dogs cute? I don't think so... But once you learn about possums, they really aren't so bad. In fact, I have always found them to be downright lovable! Anyway, I had a nice visit with Blossom. And Bobbie, too!

"Whaddya mean, wake up? Its the middle of the day! If you wake me up, you gotta feed me. Possum Rule Book, page 4. Where's the food?

Food? Food? I don't smell any banamies... Whatcha got? If I come out there, there'd better be food...
Whatcha got? Whatcha got???? Jerries??? Mmmmmmmmm, I wov jerries, (munch, munch, smacking of lips....)More? More? Got more? Add Image Oh, a new hand... Hmmm, guess it smells OK... Got food?
An' Gwapes! Ooooo good gwape... (munch, munch, more smacking of lips.)
I wov gwapes... "

SIX AGAIN

To Be 6 Again...
A man was sitting on the edge of the bed, observing his wife, looking at herself in the mirror. Since her birthday was not far off he asked what she'd like to have for her Birthday.'I'd like to be six again', she replied, still looking in the mirror.
On the morning of her Birthday, he arose early, made her a nice big bowl of Lucky Charms, and then took her to Six Flags theme park. What a day!
He put her on every ride in the park; the Death Slide, the Wall of Fear, the Screaming Monster RollerCoaster, everything there was. Five hours later they staggered out of the theme park. Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down.
He then took her to a McDonald's where he ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a chocolate shake.
Then it was off to a movie, popcorn, a soda pop, and her favorite candy, M&M's. What a fabulous adventure! Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed exhausted. He leaned over his wife with a big smile and lovingly asked, 'Well Dear,what was it like being six again?'
Her eyes slowly opened and her expression suddenly changed. 'I meant my dress size, you dufuss!!!!'

The moral of the story: Even when a man is listening, he is gonna get it wrong.
************************************************
Funny, but when I got this in an email a little while ago, I thought of one or two specific fellow bloggers... I bet they will recognize themselves here, too!

GETTING THRU CUSTOMS

Getting a hairdryer through customs...

A distinguished young woman on a flight from Ireland asked the PriestBeside her, 'Father, may I ask a favor?''
"Of course child. What may I do for you?"
''Well, I bought an expensive woman's electronic Hair dryer for myMother's birthday that is unopened and well over The Customs limits, andI'm afraid they'll confiscate it. Is there any way You could carry it through customs for me? Under your robes perhaps?'
"I would love to help you, dear, but I must warn you: I Will not lie."
'With your honest face, Father, no one will question you.'
When they got to Customs, she let the priest go ahead of her.
The official asked, 'Father, do you have anything to declare?'
'From the top of my head down to my waist, I have Nothing to declare.
The official thought this answer strange, so asked, 'And what do youhave to declare from your waist to the floor?"
''I have a marvelous instrument designed to be used on a woman, but which is, to date, unused.'
Roaring with laughter, the official said, 'Go ahead, Father. Next!'

The STAND UPPITY GARDEN

The Stand Uppity Garden

A couple of months ago, one of my favorite neighbors built a Stand Up garden for me. It was an interesting experiment… I have never seen one this far off the ground – so, we just put it together and figured we would learn from trying. Pat and his wife brought all the parts here and assembled it on site. It was on a bit of a slope, so I put bricks under the low side. Then he mixed some peat moss, vermiculite and chicken manure (this is serious chicken country – might as well bag it and sell it, right?) and I set in some plants already started in little pots. I planted string beans (Blue Lake), spinach, and some purple Basil. Bambi soon discovered these delicious morsels were right at chin level, so I needed to put a bit of netting up around the garden. Next year I will do it differently, but like I said, it has been a learning experiment. The netting was a problem for me, so I switched to nylon fencing. Much easier to work with! Ugly as sin, but easier! I was so amazed when I actually saw first the blossoms, then real little beans. It is kind of fun watching plants grow from bunny level! If you don’t know my gardening history, my other wonderful neighbor has plowed and cultivated my ground level garden for 2 years, and I have planted and replanted string beans in said garden for 2 years, and have never had more than a couple of meals worth of beans, and the few yellow wax beans were never particularly pretty. So imagine my delight when I picked my first crop of beans from the stand-uppity garden (as a little friend calls it) and have continued to harvest beans for over a month. I have had as many Blue Lakes from my 4 plants in the Stand up garden as I had from the dozen plants in the ground. And there are still new ones coming.
I put about 8 yellow wax bean plants in the stand-up and have harvested and harvested and there are still more out there to be picked in a day or two. The beans are absolutely perfect, not a blemish on a single bean! Here is one little basket full. Punkin is supervising from the shade of the Adirondack.
I also have 4 Italian flat bean plants – my favorite green bean – that have given us 2 baskets full so far.
One mistake I made… I did not support all 4 legs of the garden. The side NOT on the bricks has been slowly working its way down in the ground. Well, for several weeks, we had a lot of heavy rain, the ground got soft. But, hey! I did not have to water anything!
Next year I will plant the same number of plants but will space them differently. I think I will skip the spinach and will stick with the smaller green basil. I like the purple basil. It is pretty, and it keeps the mosquitoes away while you are picking because you then smell like basil, not a person! What mosquito wants to bite basil?
It has been great to harvest beans standing up. The bending over part in the old garden is very painful. Even tho I planted with a ground cloth in the ground level garden, the crab grass managed to get in there. Planting hurt, harvesting hurts, and weeding is almost impossible. And, in the Stand up garden, being this far up, I have not had that many weeds to worry about, or my worst problem, grass. Crab grass!
Thanks Pat and Dorothy!

NORTHERN EXPOSURE, Part 2

Sometimes My Little Corner of the World is a bit further north than most of the rest of the year. This is the country I grew up in as a small child and again as a teen, going into my college years.
We managed to take part of one day to run down to Rockport, one of my favorite spots. I don't care how hot it is in YOUR yard, it is always cool next to this stream. Just a little beyond this, maybe 50 feet, the creek drops down another falls into the river.

The river is the Lehigh and flows about than 800 feet from our house. The Pennsylvania (?)railroad built their tracks along the river which used to be navigable up as far as White Haven and some say even beyond. Now the old RR bed is used for bikers and hikers. They bring 'em in by the bus load from the camps and resorts. Just up the road a piece is this house... I had to take that pic from the road while driving - no place to stop... See the guard rail? Talk about a "white noise" machine to help you sleep! Can you imagine? But my favorite sleeping sound is still the surf and a fog horn. Oh well. Maybe once again before I die... But, until then, waterfalls will do.

Never let it be said -all play and no work (sorry!)- what is a vacation without work? Or what is an OLD house without work? I found this nasty place on the front porch. That is a 9 foot drop to the cellar level porch. Ouch. Does it look like a rotten board to you? It looks like a law suit in waiting to me - so - off to the lumber yard and a sheet of plywood nailed over the hole until my brother can get up there to put in some new tongue and groove. Not very pretty, I know - but at 3/4 an inch - nobody can go thru that hole without pulling up the plywood. So between that and the poison sumac that has been allowed to grow into the yard and driveway up back, I was pretty busy, and pretty lucky to have a chance to take a quick drive down to the river. That sumac is well over 6 feet tall. This is after I cut some of it, and the grass, back. This little opening used to be wide enough to drive my van thru. Some of the grass has not been cut this year at all. In fact, it looks like it wasn't cut last fall, either.

Sigh... Anybody wanna buy a house in the Poconos? e-mail me, make me a deal.

IN THE MOUNTAINS

BACK HOME IN THE MOUNTAINS

We made it to the house in PA... and a yard high in weeds, weeds, and untamed wisteria. The Buddha up back was so buried, I could barely find him.
First buying trip was to purchase a hedge trimmer and weed whacker. I was not a happy camper. The place was a mess. The poison sumac has advanced several feet into the yard. This is not good. I hate using Brush killer -but I was not left with much choice. The sumac was growing at the edge of the roof over the "cave" - a storage room built into the mountain side. The entrance to our apartment is under this roof - that is the first floor down there.

So far it has been cool, temps mostly in the 60s to low 70s. They have had a lot of rain up here... the river and streams are full... makes for nice waterfalls. I think we missed the Mountain Laurel - have seen only a little of it. Some of the rhododendron is in bloom. The water in the dam is up over the road - not on purpose, just a lot of rain. See the vehicles at the water's edge? The Lehigh is fast and full.
The water over the road in Hickory Run was a bit deeper this year... and somebody had pulled a few of the rocks out of the road since last year. We hit bottom in one spot. Got the tires washed at any rate!

Time is short... more later!

HAVE YOU EVER?????

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN GUILTY OF LOOKING AT OTHERS YOUR OWN AGE AND THINKING, SURELY I CAN'T LOOK THAT OLD. ????
WELL . . . YOU'LL LOVE THIS ONE.
MY NAME IS ALICE , AND I WAS SITTING IN THE WAITING ROOM FOR MY FIRST APPOINTMENT WITH A NEW DENTIST. I NOTICED HIS DDS DIPLOMA ON THE WALL, WHICH BORE HIS FULL NAME.
SUDDENLY, I REMEMBERED A TALL, HANDSOME, DARK-HAIRED BOY WITH THE SAME NAME HAD BEEN IN MY HIGH SCHOOL CLASS SOME 30-ODD YEARS AGO. COULD HE BE THE SAME GUY THAT I HAD A SECRET CRUSH ON, WAY BACK THEN?
UPON SEEING HIM, HOWEVER, I QUICKLY DISCARDED ANY SUCH THOUGHT. THIS BALDING, GRAY-HAIRED MAN WITH THE DEEPLY LINED FACE WAS WAY TOO OLD TO HAVE BEEN MY CLASSMATE.
AFTER HE EXAMINED MY TEETH, I ASKED HIM IF HE HAD ATTENDED MORGAN PARK HIGH SCHOOL .
'YES. YES, I DID. I'M A MUSTANG,' HE GLEAMED WITH PRIDE.
'WHEN DID YOU GRADUATE?' I ASKED.
HE ANSWERED, 'IN 1975. WHY DO YOU ASK?'
'YOU WERE IN MY CLASS!', I EXCLAIMED.
HE LOOKED AT ME CLOSELY.
THEN,
THAT UGLY,
OLD,
BALD,
WRINKLED FACED,
FAT-ASSED,
GRAY-HAIRED,
DECREPIT
SON-OF-A-B**** ASKED,
'WHAT DID YOU TEACH???'

THOUGHT FOR TODAY

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up.
As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up. Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
Free your heart from hatred - Forgive....
Free your mind from worries - Most never happen.
Live simply and appreciate what you have.
Give more. Expect less

NOW ............ Enough of that crap . . .. The donkey later came back, and bit the farmer who had tried to bury him. The gash from the bite got infected and the farmer eventually died in agony from septic shock.
MORAL FROM TODAY'S LESSON:
When you do something wrong, and try to cover your ass, it always comes back to bite you.

FROM THE MOUTHS OF BABES

'Our Father, Who does art in heaven, Harold is His name. Amen.' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A little boy was overheard praying: 'Lord, if you can't make me a better boy, don't worry about it. I'm having a real good time like I am.'
****************************************************************************
After the christening of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, 'That preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, and I wanted to stay with you guys.'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One four-year-old prayed, 'And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets.'
********************************************
A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they were on the way to church service, 'And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?' One little girl replied, 'Because people are sleeping.'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Taylor, 5, and Brian, 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. 'If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, 'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.' Taylor turned to his younger brother and said, ' Brian, you be Jesus !'
**********************************************
A father was at the beach with his children when the four-year-old son ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore where a seagull lay dead in the sand. 'Daddy, what happened to him?' the son asked. 'He died and went to Heaven,' the Dad replied. The boy thought a moment and then said, 'Did God throw him back down?'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A wife invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to their six-year-old daughter and said, 'Would you like to say the blessing?' 'I wouldn't know what to say,' the girl replied. 'Just say what you hear Mommy say,' the wife answered. The daughter bowed her head and said, 'Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?'
Yes, our little guys are now BIG babies, but still in their baby colors for a while... And YES, they have fledged and YES, they are fine. One reader who checks the cam periodically said she has not seen but one eaglet in the nest and often the nest is empty. She was worried. Soooo, here for all you Real Eagle fans is a pic from just this morning of the 2 youngsters in the nest at the same time. I doesn't happen often anymore, so enjoy this shot.
Coming up next - BABY POSSUM pictures and maybe a photo challenge.
THE SMELLS OF SPRING
SNIFF, SNIFF
Some of us LOVE the fragrances of late spring. Then there are those of us who spend this season with a kleenex in our hands. I am glad I do not fall into that category! As I go out the door, the heavy scent of so many blooming things just hits me. Not far from my back door I have a number of holly trees. Have you ever smelled a holly tree in bloom? Awesome. The woods are full of wild blackberries. And if you look up, you might notice the blooms on the honey locust trees. Sweet! I have discovered many people have never seen a fringe tree. Well, if you ever see one in bloom, go stick your nose in one... well, actually, it is so fragrant, you don't have to even get closer than 10 or 20 feet!
Even my irises are fragrant. OK, I planted the Iris while most of the rest of the things came up naturally here.
The rambling Rose grows wild around me and in the woods. I found another one yesterday while cutting along the bank on the John Deere. Reminds me of the way roses USED to smell! One thing you won't find in my yard is Wisteria. It overpowers me. Wisteria and Gardinias... they take my breath away, literally.
The honeysuckle is just starting to open. Soon the world will be bathed in the fragrance of their tiny sweet yellow and white blossoms. The poor butterflies won't know which way to turn! And just starting, the magnolia! Magnificent - or is it Magnifi-scent?
GARDEN SNAKES CAN BE DANGEROUS
Snakes also known as Garter Snakes (Thamnophissirtalis)can be dangerous.Yes, grass snakes, not rattlesnakes.Here's why.
A couple in Sweetwater, Texas, had a lot of pottedplants. During a recent cold spell, the wife was bringing alot of them indoors to protect them from a possible freeze. It turned out that a little green garden grass snake was hidden in one of the plants. When it had warmed up, it slithered out and the wife saw it go under the sofa. She let out a very loud scream.
The husband (who was taking a shower) ran out into the living room naked to see what the problem was. She told him there was a snake under the sofa. He got down on the floor on his hands and knees to look for it. About that time the family dog came and cold-nosed him on the behind. He thought the snake had bitten him, so he screamed and fell over on the floor. His wife thought he had had a heart attack, so she covered him up, told him to lie still and called an ambulance.
The attendants rushed in, would not listen to his protests, loaded him on the stretcher, and started carrying him out.
About that time, the snake came out from under the sofa and the Emergency Medical Technician saw it and dropped his end of the stretcher. That's when the man broke his leg and why he is still in the hospital.
The wife still had the problem of the snake in the house, so she called on a neighbor who volunteered to capture the snake.. He armed himself with a rolled-up newspaper and began poking under the couch. Soon he decided it was gone and told the woman, who sat down on the sofa in relief. But while relaxing, her hand slipped in between the cushions, where she felt the snake wriggling around. She screamed and fainted, the snake rushed back under the sofa. The neighbor man, seeing her lying there passed out, tried to use CPR to revive her. The neighbor's wife, who had just returned from shopping at the grocery store, saw her husband's mouth on the woman's mouth and slammed her husband in the back ofthe head with a bag of canned goods, knocking him out and cutting his scalp to a point where it needed stitches. The noise woke the woman from her dead faint and she saw her neighbor lying on the floor with his wife bending over him, so she assumed that the snake had bitten him. She went to the kitchen and got a small bottle of whiskey, and began pouring it down the man's throat.
By now, the police had arrived. Breathe here... They saw the unconscious man, smelled the whiskey, and assumed that a drunken fight had occurred. They were about to arrest them all, when the women tried to explain how it all happened over a little garden snake! The police called an ambulance, which took away the neighbor and his sobbing wife.
Now, the little snake again crawled out from under the sofa and one of the policemen drew his gun and fired at it. He missed the snake and hit the leg of the end table. The table fell over, the lamp on it shattered and, as the bulb broke, it started a fire in the drapes. The other policeman tried to beat out the flames, and fell through the window into the yard on top of the family dog who, startled, jumped out and raced into the street, where an oncoming car swerved to avoid it and smashed into the parked police car. Meanwhile, neighbors saw the burning drapes and called in the fire department. The firemen had started raising the fire ladder when they were halfway down the street. The rising ladder tore out the overhead wires, put out the power, and disconnected the telephones in a ten-square cityblock area (but they did get the house fire out).
Time passed! Both men were discharged from the hospital, the house was repaired, the dog came home, the police acquired a new car and all was right with their world.
A while later they were watching TV and the weatherman announced a cold snap for that night. The wife asked her husband if he thought they should bring in their plants for the night. And that's when he shot her.
