I see person after person walking past my house while texting or talking on a cellphone. When I pass them on the sidewalk, they don't even see me much less speak to me. Sometimes—oftentimes—I see people in groups of two or three, each of them on a cellphone. I also see parents walking their children, but no interacting with them because they, the parents, are on a cellphone. It’s so odd, this implication that people who aren’t actually with a person are ever so much more interesting than those who are.

It is truly a fact that many people simply have lost the ability to communicate without means of an electronic device. That said, of course, by posting this comment on a PC I am doing much the same.

Yes, but you’re not walking, driving, or biking down the street with the world shut-out, and you’re not rudely forcing other people to listen to your conversations with disembodied others. There’s a rudeness about these “devices.” Yesterday, I was behind another customer at the drugstore, and this person talked on her cellphone while being waited on, completely omitting any acknowledgement of the clerk’s humanity. She might as well have been going through a self-check.

Thanks for sending this to me. I passed it on to at least 5 others but I wonder if it will do any good.
