OSPREYS BUILDING THEIR NEST

They have started adding sticks today.

Eagles are getting wet. It is windy. Mama is protecting the young – they have tucked their heads under her chest till the storm is over. Temp has just dropped below 60. Looks like we are ready to have a week without snow!

Magic Eagle

Well, Imagine that. The LINK got copied that changes every so many seconds… and the eagle flew away on the post that got posted… but stayed on the copy in Live Writer. Go figure. What you should have had was something like this:

I hope this image doesn’t “fly away!”

Osprey Cam

OK, OK, I know this is not an osprey, but I had heard one had been spotted, so I went looking. I think it is great to see the eagle sitting on the Osprey’s box. But soon he will not be welcome, so enjoy!

Meanwhile back at the eagle’s nest – it is feeding time again. They need to eat up before the next storm hits anytime now. See how they have grown?

BAD NEWS

2012 Eagle Cam Web Log
February 27, 2012
Our latest news from the nest is that the surviving chick did not make it, so we lost both chicks to what appeared to be an eagle intruder. We've seen individual adults leaving the nest on and off, but it's not clear which adults have been visiting.
We know it's sad to lose the second eaglet, but since there's a good chance the chick was injured, we think it was a merciful thing that it did not survive, especially if the parents are dealing with another eagle around the nest.
Some of you who were with us during the 2004-2005 season remember Craig Koppie, a raptor expert with the U.S. Fish and Wildife Service. He was the one who helped deal with the George and Martha eagle drama at the Wilson Bridge and other raptor events in the Washington DC area. He's also the person who climbed our Eagle Cam nest in 2005 to take one of our chicks to Vermont for the eagle restoration project in that state.
The staff at Blackwater Refuge have asked Craig to review the video and stills and offer a biologist's opinion about what might have happened at our nest. We're waiting to hear if Craig will have time to take on this task, but we're hoping he does, since he's familiar with eagle aggression and how these types of incidents are increasing as the bald eagle population grows and eagles are vying for prime nesting spots and mates.
We've decided to keep the cam offline for just a bit longer. We will be bringing it online again soon, but we hope you'll understand our decision. We do have a good bit of news in that we're being allowed back into our old PC room this week (the room that was damaged by the rain), which means we should be able to bring the Osprey Cam online soon.
Cam watchers have asked if we think our eagle couple might lay more eggs this season. It's rather late in the season for new eggs, so we don't expect them to produce any more at this time.

EAGLE UPDATE

PROGRESS!?
02/18/12:In this shot from Saturday morning, it appears there is still a hole in the bottom egg, but the chick hasn't made much progress. Also, on Friday night our father brought the mother a rabbit dinner, which would also indicate that the parents heard a chick coming.

I sure do hope these links will open for you. Mama is still sitting and looking around... Come visit at:

TWO EGGS (over easy!)

A number of you have asked if we have any eagles this year... the answer is yes, in fact, quite a few it seems. At Blackwater, we even have 2 eggs... saw the Mama roll them over, real easy this morning. Unfortunately, I canNOT get the picture to post in blogger - but if you really want a copy, let me know. I have it in my email. Go figure.
OR, you can visit http://www.friendsofblackwater.org/camhtm2.html and keep track of them yourself!
Happy birding!

EAGLES FLEDGED

Yes, our little guys are now BIG babies, but still in their baby colors for a while... And YES, they have fledged and YES, they are fine. One reader who checks the cam periodically said she has not seen but one eaglet in the nest and often the nest is empty. She was worried. Soooo, here for all you Real Eagle fans is a pic from just this morning of the 2 youngsters in the nest at the same time. I doesn't happen often anymore, so enjoy this shot.

Coming up next - BABY POSSUM pictures and maybe a photo challenge.

EAGLE BABIES latest pic

This is the first time in a while I have seen both babies in the nest at the same time and a bonus - with a parent. But, as you might have noticed, I have been outside WORKING in the mess I call a yard and not eagle watching. The youngsters are "branchers" now, and have been for a couple of weeks, which means they are hopping out of the nest onto the branches where they can try out their wings. Often, one will be in the nest while the other one is sitting on a branch nearby usually with a parent.
Remember, you can visit the eagle cam at http://www.friendsofblackwater.org/camhtm2.html with a link to the osprey nest.

The ospreys' eggs should hatch around the first of June.

And - Lucy's eggs should hatch this week.

SOOO much excitement!

THE CRAZINESS OF SPRING

CRITTER UPDATES and MORE!

Sorry I have not had baby eagle pictures on here for a while… you would not believe how busy I have been. Well, OK, maybe busy is not the right word… Ummm, let me see… the truth is, I have been having a tough time keeping it together. I'M GETTING OLD!
The eagle babies are branching right now. This means they are often on a near-by branch, flapping their wings, dreaming of flying, and out of camera range. This one is covering his food,

another sign of maturity.

The ospreys have 3 eggs. Mama is waiting patiently. You will notice she has a much nicer nest this year. Guess they grew up, too, over the winter.
Spring has sprung here on the Shore. That means gardens to be taken care of, grass to cut, weeds to pull… Buddha looks like he is sitting in a jungle! Then add to it a couple sick cats, trips to the vet’s, an almost trip to Roanoke to celebrate Caleb’s 8th birthday (as in van packed, reservations made, 4 cats at the vet’s) and we got a phone call the night before we were to leave that Caleb’s cold was NOT better – in fact it had turned to pneumonia.

But, what would I do without my friends? One friend built a stand-up garden for me… I do have a few plants in it now and seeds in pots, as one of my little friends said, “Waiting to hatch.”

Civic duties have been ramped up, town meetings, party meetings, spring plans… And, my computer seems to have slowed down even more as my frustration level has gone up. Then there are loved ones in Crisis… and the frustration and helplessness that goes along with that. When I am not saying my OM Mani Padme Hum's I am saying the Serenity Prayer… Sometimes it seems everything just happens at once. Maybe I am just getting too old to handle it all!
Anyway, to catch you up with things… here are a few shots of this Little Corner of the World.

Punkin and Spook are very happy to be back home after having spent some serious time being separated while one or the other one was getting meds at the vet’s. Usually Spook spends his days mostly hidden, either in the tool shed (it has rained everyday for weeks it seems) or out in the woods where I can only catch a glimpse of him. Punkin tucks himself into parts of the garden closer to the house, to keep his eye on his people, and stays there until the rain gets too heavy for me to go out with the camera. It was misting as I took this shot on my way to check the rain gauge.
We had a very gutsy little visitor on the carport. I am used to the bluejays coming up and stealing the boy’s food, but one day, I saw something I could not believe. Mighty Mouse – or mighty vole or shrew… the little stinker would sneak in behind their dry food dish, pop up grab a bite of food and hide behind the dish to eat it, then pop up again. This little dude seems to have more, ummm, more athletic equipment than brains… HEY, DUDE, THAT'S THE CAT'S DISH!
Just got a phone call phone call. Another clutch of goose eggs has hatched, not Lucy’s, yet, she got a late start… but another mama has waddled her new 5 over to the pond. Pictures when we can get them… this is not a good time to go chasing after her, not on their first outing.
OK, I guess we are caught up, sorta…

THE EAGLES HAVE TWO EGGS!

Our eagles have 2 eggs. As you can see, we have had some snow, but it should melt today. However, the snow makes the eggs show up better!
Hey, little dudes, roll over...
Visit http://www.friendsofblackwater.org/camhtm2.html to keep track of the eggs and then the babies.

Papa is doing better with providing food. See breakfast? Here he is on the osprey nest, in this morning's fog.

THE EAGLES ARE BACK

Actually, they first showed up in November, sitting on the osprey box, but we were not sure if they were OUR eagles or just an occasional eagle passing through. By OUR eagles, I mean a nesting pair that will stay and nest here. Seems they decided this seemed like a good place to stay, and, in spite of the bad weather, lots of rain, cold temps, 60 mph winds, they got busy fixing up the nest. Interestingly, they seem to prefer the Osprey nest box for their, um, playground... at least that is where all the on camera mating seems to be taking place. Back in the nest, mama has a nice soft cup formed. They also seem to be practicing eating in the nest as there are frequently small bones or a piece of a fish left behind.

I am not sure if this is our same couple from last year. If I remember correctly, Papa did not seem too great in the food provision department. Mama had to go find most of her own food and then feed the babies. SO, hopefully if this is the same pair, they will have a bit of maturity this year and do a bit better.
You can go to http://www.friendsofblackwater.org/camhtm2.html for a minute by minute update of both the osprey platform and the eagle nest PLUS lots of other material on the birds.
